A paw print to keep, in Aventura

Aventura, Florida

Paw print keepsakes in Aventura: where to start

Salt air along the Intracoastal is tough on anything kept on an Aventura balcony. Metal corrodes, paint fades and wood warps within a season or two. If you want an outdoor piece, choose sealed stone or glazed ceramic and bring it inside before storms, when balconies must be cleared anyway. For most condo owners, an indoor tribute near the glass, with the waterway beyond it, suits best.

In Aventura's condo towers, space and association rules shape memorials. Most families choose something indoors: a sleek urn on a shelf, a framed paw print, a glass keepsake holding a trace of ashes or a portrait painted from a photo. Seasonal residents often pick pieces small enough to take home in hand luggage, and ask the maker for a certificate describing the contents for airport security.

Outdoor and barn cats are common around Aventura, and they don't always die where you'd expect. If you find your cat in a shed, under a hedge or in a hay loft, bring them inside to a cool, quiet spot and lay them on a towel before you do anything else. A print is often still possible, even some hours later. Clean the pads gently with a damp cloth first, because dust and straw show up in clay and ink.

Aventura is home to about 39,880 people, the 77th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Hialeah, about 11 miles (18 km) away, which is where some providers serving Aventura are based.

If you want to compare providers, look at Sunny Isles Beach (2 miles), Hallandale Beach (2 miles) and North Miami Beach (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

14,500

Aventura: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

39,880 ÷ 2.5 = 15,952 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

1,200

Aventura families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Aventura

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

Cremation accounts for about 72.5%[5] of human deaths in Florida, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.

The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons in Aventura and a print that lasts

If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Aventura heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in May, June, July, August, September and October you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.

If your pet dies at home during May, June, July, August, September and October, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Aventura, check which approach each provider takes.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules in Florida that touch on keepsakes

You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Florida are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.

The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Aventura.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Aventura or your HOA adds anything.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, the first few hours usually leave enough time to make a print. Settle them on a towel somewhere cool.
  2. Gather what you need: a damp cloth, and either clay you've softened between your palms or a sheet of card fixed to a board alongside a pet-safe ink pad.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Press it gently onto the pads rather than forcing the paw down.
  4. Take a nose print too if you'd like one, with a light touch of ink or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, out of direct sun and well clear of radiators, before framing it or mailing it.

Remembering your pet through their print

Aventura's residents come from across Latin America, Israel, Russia, Canada and the Northeast, and customs around memorials differ. Some keep ashes near candles and family photos; others divide them among relatives in several countries; others prefer a scattering at sea. Talk through the choices with each provider, and before shipping ashes abroad, check what paperwork the destination country and carrier require.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Aventura?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Aventura?

Usually yes. Sunny Isles Beach is about 2 miles away, Hallandale Beach is about 2 miles away and North Miami Beach is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is Aventura big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 14,500 Aventura households keep a dog or cat and around 1,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 39,880), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 11 miles from Aventura) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why take a paw print in Aventura if I already have plenty of photos?

Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Aventura has around 14,500 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 1,200 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
