Getting your pet's paw print in Key West

Key West, Florida

Paw print keepsakes in Key West: where to start

Many Key West families feel the sea is the natural place for a farewell. A sunset boat trip past the reef line, with a dissolving urn released at the legal distance from shore, is a farewell many islanders choose. Keeping back a little ash for jewelry or a small urn means part of your pet stays with you. Find out the total weight of ash before dividing it.

Salt air, sun and constant humidity are hard on almost every material in Key West. Outdoors, only stone and bronze really last; painted wood, resin and photographs fade within a season. On a porch, choose a heavy, sealed urn or a stone marker in a large pot. Indoors, keep keepsakes away from open windows where salt spray drifts in, and check wooden urns once a year for mold during the wet season.

Around Key West, a home-visit vet may be covering a wide area and can only give you a rough arrival window. Waiting is hard, but it can also be the time to take the print, while your pet is settled and you're not watching the door. Lay out a towel, the clay and a few treats in the room where they're resting. By the time the car pulls in, the keepsake can already be drying on the table.

Key West's population is around 24,999, the 103rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Homestead (105 miles, a larger centre), Naples (110 miles) and Cutler Bay (115 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Key West routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

9,200

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Key West

How we calculated this

24,999 ÷ 2.5 = 10,000 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,200. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

770

Key West families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

9,200 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 770 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

In Florida, about 72.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Key West only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

When the weather works against clay and ink

Hot months in Key West are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.

If you're planning a home goodbye in May, June, July, August, September and October, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Key West are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

Rules in Florida that touch on keepsakes

If you might move away from Florida one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Florida allows, set out below.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Key West may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Your paw print plan for Key West

  1. If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
  2. Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
  3. Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
  4. Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
  5. Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
  6. Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.

Remembering your pet through their print

Space is tight in most Key West homes, so memorials tend to be small and portable: a compact urn on a shelf, a slim locket, a paw print in a frame. Many residents also move on after a few years, which makes something easy to carry a sensible choice. Take your time; a plain box will hold the ashes safely until you decide.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Key West?

Usually yes. Homestead is about 105 miles away, Naples is about 110 miles away and Cutler Bay is about 115 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Key West page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Key West?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

How many pet owners live in Key West?

By our estimate, about 9,200 households in Key West have at least one dog or cat, and around 770 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 24,999, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?

Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.

Can I get my dog's nose print?

Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
