Paw and nose prints in Rome: a calm guide
By our estimate, about 14,500 households in Rome share their home with a dog or cat. Every one of those paws can be pressed into clay or ink, ideally long before goodbye. Here's how.

Rome, Georgia
Arranging a paw print around Rome
Rome's humid summers, heavy rain and winter frosts wear down cheap outdoor pieces. Granite, bronze and natural fieldstone are the materials that last in a Floyd County yard; resin and painted concrete fade and crack within a few seasons. On a hillside lot, set a marker on level ground so runoff does not tip it or bury it. Keep fabric, fur and paper keepsakes inside.
With three rivers and plenty of wooded hills around town, some Rome families choose a memorial rooted in the landscape: a sapling planted with a portion of the ashes, a smooth river stone engraved with a name, or a garden bench facing the view. Dividing ashes among several pieces works best once you know the returned weight, which the crematory can estimate in advance.
Small towns rarely have a pet memorial shop, but they nearly always have someone who engraves: a monument company that letters headstones, a trophy and awards shop, or a sign maker with a laser. Many will engrave a paw print from a clean scan onto slate, wood, metal or a garden stone. Take them a photo of your pet's print and ask whether they can reproduce the real pad shapes, not a generic clip-art paw.
Rome is home to about 38,934 people, the 30th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Atlanta, about 58 miles (93 km) away, which is where some providers serving Rome are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Calhoun (22 miles), Cartersville (23 miles) and Acworth (32 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
14,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Rome has (estimate)
How we calculated this
38,934 ÷ 2.5 = 15,574 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,200
Estimated dog and cat losses in Rome each year
How we calculated this
14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Around 54.2%[5] of people in Georgia are cremated, a middle-of-the-road rate that means local traditions vary from family to family. Some households want a grave to visit, others want ashes at home. A paw print works with both. It can sit on a shelf, be set into a garden stone above a grave or be engraved onto an urn.
That Georgia rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Rome only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Clay, ink and the local climate
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Rome, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Rome, check which approach each provider takes.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Georgia: Georgia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules in Georgia that touch on keepsakes
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Georgia does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
The official Georgia local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Rome.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Georgia level first; our Georgia rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Rome or your HOA adds anything.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint next to the paw, if they'd like to.
- If the print is taken after death, let an adult or the vet do it, and show your child the finished keepsake.
- Make a copy for your child's room, and tuck the original away out of harm's way.
- Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.
Ways families in Rome keep a print close
Rome has deep roots and old family ties, and memorial choices often reflect that: a stone set in a garden that has been in the family for decades, or an urn kept beside photographs on a mantel. If you would like something portable as well, a small keepsake vessel, a piece of cremation jewelry or a framed paw print can sit alongside a larger urn and later go to a grandchild.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Rome actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Atlanta, about 58 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Rome and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Rome page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 54.2%[5] of Georgia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Rome?
The closest communities we cover are Calhoun (about 22 miles), Cartersville (about 23 miles) and Acworth (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rome too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Rome big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 14,500 Rome households keep a dog or cat and around 1,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 38,934), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How many households in Rome have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 14,500 households in Rome have a dog or a cat, and around 1,200 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
