Getting your pet's paw print in Bixby

Bixby, Oklahoma

Getting a paw print in Bixby: the local picture

The sandy river-bottom soil around Bixby drains faster than the upland clay a few miles away, which is kinder to a garden marker, but summer sun and spring hail still punish anything left outdoors. Pick a slab of native sandstone or granite with engraved letters and settle it low among ground covers. A living memorial, maybe a crape myrtle or young oak, grows alongside your memories.

Bixby's newer homes usually have small back yards and HOA covenants, so lots of families keep their memorial indoors: a small urn among the books, a paw cast next to family pictures, or a charm worn daily. Given space and permission, a flat stone among the day lilies, or a young redbud, can mark a beloved sunny corner outdoors instead.

If your pet will travel to a crematory near Tulsa, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Bixby. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.

With roughly 32,766 residents, Bixby is the 12th-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover. Tulsa, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bixby run from there.

Our pages for Jenks (6 miles), Broken Arrow (9 miles, a larger centre) and Sapulpa (14 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bixby as well.

Our estimate

12,000

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Bixby

How we calculated this

32,766 ÷ 2.5 = 13,106 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

A pet at home in Bixby

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Roughly 58.6%[5] of deaths in Oklahoma end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.

For the Oklahoma figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bixby rather than as pet data.

Seasons in Bixby and a print that lasts

Planning an outdoor memorial in Bixby? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.

In the hot months, take prints in a cool, air-conditioned room and dry the paw first so ink doesn't smudge. In January, when lows average about 28°F, warm the clay in your hands and keep plaster work indoors. A pet who has been in cold storage will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead of the other way round.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Bixby vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

Landlords, parks and permits in Oklahoma

If you might move away from Oklahoma one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Oklahoma allows, set out below.

Oklahoma keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Bixby.

The rules that apply across Oklahoma (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Oklahoma page. Bixby may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Your paw print plan for Bixby

  1. Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
  3. Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
  5. Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
  6. Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Some Bixby families sprinkle a bit of the ashes by the Arkansas River, where they spent many summer evenings together, once they know it's permitted on that stretch of bank. Others hold on to all of it at home and pick out small keepsakes for each family member. Ask your provider for extra containers at the start if you plan to share.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Tulsa to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Tulsa (roughly 16 miles from Bixby) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Bixby?

The closest communities we cover are Jenks (about 6 miles), Broken Arrow (about 9 miles) and Sapulpa (about 14 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bixby too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Oklahoma?

For people, yes: about 58.6%[5] of Oklahoma deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bixby follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is Bixby big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 12,000 Bixby households keep a dog or cat and around 1,000 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 32,766), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Why is my clay paw print still soft days later?

Humidity slows air-dry clay a lot. In a damp spell, a print that feels firm on top can stay soft underneath for days. Keep it indoors on a wire rack, turn it every day and wait until it's pale and light all through before sealing. Don't put air-dry clay in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable, or it can crack.

How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?

Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
