Getting a paw print in Waco: the local picture
Cameron Park's cliffs and trails, Lake Waco and the Brazos River give many families a place they connect with a pet. If you'd like to scatter ashes near water or in a park, check the rules for that place first and choose a calm day. A biodegradable urn planted with a drought-tolerant native tree in your own yard suits the Central Texas climate.
The memorial choice can wait. Many Waco families bring ashes home in a simple container and decide later, once the first weeks have passed. That time helps you think about whether you want one urn or small keepsakes for grown children and relatives across Texas, and lets you compare quality and prices without pressure. Ask for a written total including engraving.
A clinic print is often a round clay disc with your pet's name stamped in, taken quickly while the team is with you. It's a lovely keepsake, but engravers and jewelers usually need a flat, high-contrast image. If you think you might want jewelry or an engraved urn later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well. It takes a minute more and saves regret.
Waco's population is around 147,788, the 23rd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Waco sits within easy reach of Robinson (6 miles), Woodway (7 miles) and Hewitt (7 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Waco; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
54,500
Waco: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
147,788 ÷ 2.5 = 59,115 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 54,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
4,550
dog and cat deaths per year in Waco, our estimate
How we calculated this
54,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,550 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
About 55.7%[5] of people in Texas are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Waco, not as a count of pets.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

What owners in Waco typically pay for a print
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Waco, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Landlords, parks and permits in Texas
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Texas does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Waco.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Waco's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your paw print plan for Waco
- Skip the table. Take the clay or card to your pet instead, wherever they're comfortable, whether that's their bed or a patch of floor.
- Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
- Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Waco's family homes often have yards suited to an outdoor memorial: an engraved stone under a live oak, or a planter on the porch. Choose materials that stand up to intense sun, hail and summer storms; granite and sealed stone last well. If you rent, including near campus, a small urn, a paw print impression or cremation jewelry is easier to keep and carry.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Waco?
By our estimate, about 54,500 households in Waco have at least one dog or cat, and around 4,550 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 147,788, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Waco?
The closest communities we cover are Robinson (about 6 miles), Woodway (about 7 miles) and Hewitt (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Waco too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[5] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Waco follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
