Bountiful, Utah
Arranging a paw print around Bountiful
Many Bountiful families have lived in one house for decades, and the garden may already hold markers for animals who came before. Setting a new stone beside the older ones can feel like adding a name to a family record. Households in newer homes or apartments can do the same indoors with an urn and photo on the mantel, or a pendant holding a pinch of ash.
The view from Bountiful's benches, across the valley to the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island, is part of what home means for many residents. A print of that view at dusk, or of a favorite switchback in Mueller Park, pairs naturally with an urn. If you would like to scatter some ashes on public land, confirm the rules with whoever manages it before heading out.
Small-town clinics in Bountiful may close at weekends, so if your pet dies on a Saturday evening, you may be looking after them at home until Monday. A print can still be taken during that time. Keep your pet cool, lay them on a towel, and press the paw gently into warmed clay, or press the clay onto the paw if the leg has stiffened.
With roughly 44,988 residents, Bountiful is the 22nd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Bountiful are based about 8 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Bountiful sits within easy reach of North Salt Lake (3 miles), Salt Lake City (8 miles, a larger centre) and Farmington (8 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Bountiful; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
16,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Bountiful
How we calculated this
44,988 ÷ 2.5 = 17,995 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Bountiful each year
How we calculated this
16,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Utah
Cremation is a minority choice for people in Utah, at about 46.1%[5], and the pet aftercare trade is smaller to match. A crematory an hour away may not list prints at all, and a vet clinic may never have been asked for one. Bring your own kit. A pack of air-dry clay plus a card and a pet-safe ink pad costs little, fits in a bag and means the print doesn't depend on anyone else's supply cupboard.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Bountiful, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Weather in Bountiful and your pet's print
Snow and ice in January, February, November and December can hold up home-visit vets and collection vans around Bountiful, sometimes by a day. If your pet dies during a storm or a cold snap, you may be caring for them longer than you expected. Keep them in the chilliest room of the house, away from heating, on a towel or blanket. Take the print early in that time, while the paws are still soft enough to press cleanly.
Winter in Bountiful brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February, November and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Bountiful whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

What the law in Utah does and doesn't cover
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Utah does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
We keep Utah's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Utah rules summary. Before a home burial in Bountiful, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint next to the paw, if they'd like to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
- Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.
Remembering your pet through their print
Bountiful's east winds can topple fences and trees, so outdoor memorials here need to be low and solid. A flat granite marker set flush in the ground, or a bronze plaque fixed to a rock, will stay put where a small statue might not. Wind chimes and hanging ornaments are better indoors or in a sheltered corner of a porch.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 8 miles from Bountiful) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Bountiful page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Bountiful?
January, February, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bountiful?
Usually yes. North Salt Lake is about 3 miles away, Salt Lake City is about 8 miles away and Farmington is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
Can I make a plaster paw cast in cold weather?
Yes, but do it indoors. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it has cured, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. Mix it with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm and never leave a curing cast in a car, garage or porch overnight during a Bountiful winter.
