Midvale, Utah
Who takes paw prints in Midvale
Midvale homeowners sometimes plant a maple or lay an engraved flagstone by the back steps, while renters, who may move every year or two, lean toward things that fit in a pocket or a glovebox: a slim locket holding a few grains, a palm-sized glass heart, a printed photo book. Whatever you pick should suit the rooms you live in now and survive moving day.
The Salt Lake Valley's freezing winters and blazing summers are hard on anything placed outdoors, and Midvale is no exception. If you do set a memorial outside, pick granite, bronze or glazed ceramic and bed it into the soil so it cannot tip or be carried off. An urn on a bookshelf, by contrast, needs no protection from frost, sun or curious passersby.
Small-town clinics in Midvale may close at weekends, so if your pet dies on a Saturday evening, you may be looking after them at home until Monday. A print can still be taken during that time. Keep your pet cool, lay them on a towel, and press the paw gently into warmed clay, or press the clay onto the paw if the leg has stiffened.
Midvale's population is around 36,099, the 30th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 10 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Midvale run from there.
Our pages for Murray (3 miles), Sandy (4 miles, a larger centre) and Cottonwood Heights (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Midvale as well.
Our estimate
13,500
Midvale: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
36,099 ÷ 2.5 = 14,440 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 13,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,100
Midvale families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,100 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

How Utah thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Utah, where about 46.1%[5] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Midvale tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather works against clay and ink
Planning an outdoor memorial in Midvale? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.
If you've bought a print kit to keep for later, store it indoors, not in the garage. In Midvale, a garage can top 94°F in July and drop below freezing in January, and both extremes spoil supplies: heat dries out ink pads and clay, frost splits plaster bags and stiffens molding putty. Check the kit every few months, and replace the clay if it has hardened in the packet.

Paw print costs around Midvale, line by line
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Midvale, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Burial, scattering and prints in Utah
Some towns and councils in Utah run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

Getting a paw print in Midvale, step by step
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Remembering your pet through their print
Midvale's smelter history and working-class roots give the town a practical character, and many residents choose simple, unfussy memorials: a small wooden urn, a framed photo tucked behind a collar, or a clay paw print. In apartments with no yard at all, a floating wall shelf or a shadow box creates a small place of remembrance without taking up floor space.

Questions people ask
How does Midvale's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Midvale, with average highs around 94°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Midvale?
Usually yes. Murray is about 3 miles away, Sandy is about 4 miles away and Cottonwood Heights is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Midvale follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Midvale actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Midvale and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Who else can take a paw print if my vet in Midvale doesn't?
Several people can. The crematory that serves Midvale normally makes one when your pet arrives. A mobile or home-visit vet may carry a kit. A groomer who knows your pet can tidy the paw fur and help you take one on a good day. And you can do it yourself with air-dry clay and a pet-safe ink pad from a craft store. What matters is that it happens before cremation or burial.
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
