Millcreek, Utah
How owners in Millcreek get a paw print
Mount Olympus rises straight above east Millcreek, and many residents see its rock face every morning. A memorial that echoes it, such as a photo of the peak at sunrise or a slab of Utah granite engraved with a name, can feel personal. Indoor urns and wall pieces suit apartments and condos, where outdoor space is limited or shared with neighbors.
Condo and apartment living is common along Millcreek's main corridors, and HOAs and landlords often limit what goes into shared gardens. Wall-mounted memorials, shadow boxes, keepsake jewelry and small urns sidestep that problem. If you own a house on a larger lot, a flush garden stone or memorial shrub is an option, as long as nothing sits in the park strip.
Around Millcreek, a home-visit vet may be covering a wide area and can only give you a rough arrival window. Waiting is hard, but it can also be the time to take the print, while your pet is settled and you're not watching the door. Lay out a towel, the clay and a few treats in the room where they're resting. By the time the car pulls in, the keepsake can already be drying on the table.
With roughly 63,926 residents, Millcreek is the 13th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Millcreek run from there.
Our pages for Holladay (2 miles), South Salt Lake (4 miles) and Murray (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Millcreek as well.
Our estimate
23,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Millcreek
How we calculated this
63,926 ÷ 2.5 = 25,570 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 23,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,950
dog and cat deaths per year in Millcreek, our estimate
How we calculated this
23,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,950 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Cremation is a minority choice for people in Utah, at about 46.1%[5], and the pet aftercare trade is smaller to match. A crematory an hour away may not list prints at all, and a vet clinic may never have been asked for one. Bring your own kit. A pack of air-dry clay plus a card and a pet-safe ink pad costs little, fits in a bag and means the print doesn't depend on anyone else's supply cupboard.
That Utah rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Millcreek only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather in Millcreek and your pet's print
Planning an outdoor memorial in Millcreek? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.
Home burial in Millcreek runs to two different clocks. In January, February and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Millcreek, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

What Utah allows after your pet dies
Nothing in Utah restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Millcreek.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Millcreek's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Choose one calm afternoon to print every pet in the house, starting with the most relaxed animal.
- Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
- Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal and clean every paw straight away, so no one licks ink off anyone else.
- Keep each turn short, a couple of minutes per pet, with a treat after every press.
- Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
- Store the set together with the date written on the back, so no print goes missing over the years.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Freezing winters and hot summers mean anything left outdoors in Millcreek has to be tough. Granite, bronze and high-fired ceramic survive for decades, while resin and painted wood fade, peel and crack within a few seasons. For a living memorial, a native such as Gambel oak or bigtooth maple suits these foothills, turns color in October, and needs little extra water once established.

Questions people ask
Does the Millcreek climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Millcreek?
Usually yes. Holladay is about 2 miles away, South Salt Lake is about 4 miles away and Murray is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Millcreek page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Millcreek each year?
Our estimate is around 1,950. It comes from Millcreek's population (about 63,926), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 23,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
Why did my air-dry clay paw print crack?
Usually because it dried too fast. In hot, dry weather, or near a heater or sunny window, the outside shrinks before the inside has set, and the thin edges of the toes crack first. Next time, dry it slowly indoors at room temperature, loosely covered with a cloth for the first day. Small cracks can be filled with a little fresh clay and smoothed with a damp finger.
