Who takes paw prints in Heidelberg
Heidelberg's flats and student rooms rarely have space for a large memorial, so many owners choose something small: a compact urn on a shelf, a keepsake pendant holding a little of the ashes, or a paw print in clay. If family live elsewhere in Germany or abroad, a few small keepsake urns let everyone keep a part. Ask for the ashes to be divided before they're returned.
The Philosophers' Walk above the Neckar, the forests of the Königstuhl and the riverbanks are places many Heidelberg families link with happy times. Rules on scattering ashes vary, so check before you do anything in a public forest or on the river; a quiet visit with flowers or a photo can be a meaningful alternative. Pet cemeteries also offer a permanent place to visit.
In a city like Heidelberg, most vets work with one or two pet crematories, and a clay or ink paw print is a routine add-on for both. Sometimes it's included in the cremation package; sometimes it's a small separate charge. Ask which, and ask who takes it: the clinic before collection, or the crematory at intake. Knowing that tells you when the window closes.
Heidelberg is home to about 160,000 people, the 5th-largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover. Mannheim, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Heidelberg run from there.
Heidelberg sits within easy reach of Mannheim (11 miles), Karlsruhe (30 miles) and Mainz (45 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Heidelberg; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Germany figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Heidelberg tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Heidelberg, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

What owners in Heidelberg typically pay for a print
We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[4]. In Heidelberg, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Baden-Wurttemberg: Baden-Wurttemberg costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and prints in Baden-Wurttemberg
Renters in Baden-Wurttemberg often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Baden-Wurttemberg allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.
Your paw print plan for Heidelberg
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, use very soft clay or inkless paper and the lightest pressure. Tiny toes show best in clay.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
- Dry and store every print indoors, and photograph it so a maker can work from the image.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
If you have a garden or allotment, a small memorial stone, a flowering shrub or a tree planted over a biodegradable urn can give you a place to return to each spring. Sandstone is everywhere in Heidelberg's buildings, but it weathers over time; granite holds lettering longer outdoors. Indoors, a ceramic or wooden urn beside a photo can become a quiet corner of remembrance.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Mannheim to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Mannheim (roughly 11 miles from Heidelberg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Heidelberg?
Usually yes. Mannheim is about 11 miles away, Karlsruhe is about 30 miles away and Mainz is about 45 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Heidelberg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What should I ask for if I don't know the local word for a paw print?
Say paw print, and show a photo if you can; most vets and crematoria in Germany will understand. It can help to know the local term: Pfotenabdruck in German, empreinte de patte in French, pootafdruk in Dutch, impronta della zampa in Italian. Ask whether they take a clay impression, an ink print or both, and whether it's included in the price.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
