Paw Print Keepsakes in Baden-Wurttemberg: what to know

Two free tools help owners across Baden-Wurttemberg plan a print. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

Home euthanasia has become far more common across Baden-Wurttemberg, and it has made paw prints easier. When the vet comes to you, the goodbye happens on your pet's own bed, with no waiting room and no rush to leave. Many home-visit vets carry a clay kit. Even if they don't, you can take your own print before they arrive, in a room your pet knows.

Cremation habits in Baden-Wurttemberg and the print window

Cremation is the norm for people in Baden-Wurttemberg (about 76.0%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Baden-Wurttemberg rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[2]. In Baden-Wurttemberg, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.

In Baden-Wurttemberg, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[3], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[4].

Landlords, parks and permits in Baden-Wurttemberg

Rules in Baden-Wurttemberg say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. Choose one calm afternoon to print every pet in the house, starting with the most relaxed animal.
  2. Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
  3. Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal and clean every paw straight away, so no one licks ink off anyone else.
  4. Keep each turn short, a couple of minutes per pet, with a treat after every press.
  5. Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
  6. Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.

From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone

If you'd like ashes and the print together without wearing them, an ashes-in-glass piece needs only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[7] of ashes, and the paw can be engraved on its base or a matching frame. Use our jewelry ash capacity guide to see how far your pet's ashes will go, and our ashes sharing planner if several people want a piece.

Questions people ask

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Baden-Wurttemberg?

Across Baden-Wurttemberg, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

How many communities do you cover in Baden-Wurttemberg?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 5 communities in Baden-Wurttemberg, including Stuttgart, Mannheim and Karlsruhe. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

How much does a paw print cost in Baden-Wurttemberg?

Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[3], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[4]. Ask local providers for a written price.

Can my vet in Baden-Wurttemberg take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Baden-Wurttemberg?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
