Because Germany cremates about 76.0%[1] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.

What the law in Baden-Wurttemberg does and doesn't cover
Some towns and councils in Baden-Wurttemberg run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.

How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Karlsruhe page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Mannheim to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Mannheim (roughly 34 miles from Karlsruhe) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Karlsruhe?

How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
