Getting a paw print in Stuttgart: the local picture
In Stuttgart, many people have a garden plot or a small piece of land among the orchards on the slopes, and a memorial stone or plant for a pet fits well there. If you keep ashes, a simple urn at home is common, and some families place an engraved stone in the garden even if the ashes stay indoors. Weather-resistant stone suits the region's cold winters.
Pet cemeteries in Germany let families visit a grave, much as they would for a person, and some offer urn plots for ashes. That suits people who want a place to go. Others choose a tree urn or a keepsake like a paw print cast. Ask what each option involves over time, including any yearly fees for a grave. There is no need to decide everything in the first week.
If your pet dies at an emergency or specialty hospital in Stuttgart, aftercare is usually arranged through that hospital's own crematory contract, which may not be the one your regular vet uses. Staff there can often take a quick clay or ink print, but at 3 am it may not happen unless you ask. Say clearly that you want one, and if the answer is uncertain, ask the crematory to take it at intake instead.
Stuttgart's population is around 635,000, the largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover.
Families in Stuttgart often end up using a provider from Karlsruhe (39 miles), Heidelberg (49 miles) and Mannheim (59 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
76.0%[1]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Because Germany cremates about 76.0%[1] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.
The Germany figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Getting a clean print in Stuttgart in any season
Local weather in Stuttgart affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
In Stuttgart, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[4], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[5].

Burial, scattering and prints in Baden-Wurttemberg
Rules in Baden-Wurttemberg say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Remembering your pet through their print
Swabians are known for being practical, and many families here choose memorials that fit everyday life: an urn that sits on a bookshelf, a framed paw or claw print, a piece of jewelry worn daily, or a stone for the garden. Whatever you choose, ask for a size guide first, since ash volume varies enormously between a budgie, a cat and a large dog.

Questions people ask
Why does the Stuttgart page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Stuttgart?
The closest communities we cover are Karlsruhe (about 39 miles), Heidelberg (about 49 miles) and Mannheim (about 59 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Stuttgart too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
