Arranging a paw print around Florence
The hills around Florence, from Fiesole to the vineyards toward Chianti, are places many families connect with Sunday outings. Scattering ashes in the countryside is a personal choice, but rules vary by comune and landowners must agree, so check first. Many Florentine families keep some ashes at home in a small urn or pendant even after scattering, so that there is always something to hold.
Florence has centuries of craftsmanship, from the goldsmiths of the Ponte Vecchio to marble from nearby Carrara and terracotta from Impruneta. Many families choose a memorial with that same care: a piece of jewellery holding a few ashes, a small marble or stone urn, a terracotta planter, or a paw print impression. Handmade pieces often feel more personal than mass-produced ones.
Mid-sized practices in Florence often share weekend and evening cover with other clinics, so the vet on duty when your pet dies may not know you. A simple fix: ask your regular clinic to add a note to your pet's record saying you want a paw print before collection. It takes a receptionist thirty seconds, and the request is then there for whoever opens the file, even if you're too upset to mention it yourself.
Florence's population is around 382,000, the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Florence are based about 50 miles away in Bologna, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Florence often end up using a provider from Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Italy
In Italy, where only around 38.16%[1] of the dead are cremated, a pet's goodbye often ends with a blanket and a spade rather than a collection van. Before you wrap your pet, pause for three small things: a paw print, a snip of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind an ear, and the collar and tag. Once the grave is filled, none of those can be gathered again.
The Italy percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Florence, not as a count of pets.
Getting a clean print in Florence in any season
Local weather in Florence affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[4] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[5]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Florence, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Tuscany: Tuscany costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Landlords, parks and permits in Tuscany
Rules in Tuscany mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
- Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats to keep your pet's attention forward and their head still.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
- Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
Turning a print into something lasting
In Florence, burial remains the traditional choice for people, and on 2 November many families still carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves. Some now remember a pet in the same season, with flowers beside the ashes or a candle on the windowsill. Having something physical to gather around, whether an urn, a small marble plaque or a keepsake, gives those moments a natural focus.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Florence actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Bologna, about 50 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Florence and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?
Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Florence page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Florence?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[7], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Florence which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
How do I get my pet's paw print in Florence?
You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
