Siena, Tuscany
How owners in Siena get a paw print
Siena is a city that remembers: its seventeen contrade each hold their history close, with flags, chapels and celebrations passed down through families. That sense of belonging can shape how people remember a pet too. A small urn, an engraved stone, a photo in a frame or a piece of jewellery holding a little ash all fit Italian homes, where space is often limited.
Cremation for people in Italy is less common than in northern Europe, at close to four in ten nationally, though it is rising. For pets it is increasingly usual. Some Sienese families keep ashes at home, others choose a quiet spot in the Tuscan countryside. If scattering on land you don't own, ask permission first and check local rules. Many people keep the urn at home until they have decided, which may take months.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Florence, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Siena. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
About 54,000 people live in Siena, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Siena are based about 31 miles away in Florence, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Siena sits within easy reach of Florence (31 miles, a larger centre), Bologna (81 miles, a larger centre) and Rome (114 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Siena; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation habits in Italy and the print window
Burial is still the familiar path in Italy; cremation covers only about 38.16%[1] of the dead there, and some owners worry that making a keepsake of a pet's paw will seem odd to the neighbors. It isn't odd at all. A print is a quiet, gentle memorial, not unlike keeping a curl from a baby's first haircut. Make it for yourself, and share it only if and when you want to.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Italy figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Siena tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Siena what's included before you choose.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Tuscany: Tuscany costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules worth knowing in Tuscany
Rules in Tuscany mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
Your paw print plan for Siena
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print and send it to you, so you know it's clear.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
- Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.
Turning a print into something lasting
Tuscan stone and terracotta are part of daily life in Siena, and some people choose a memorial in those materials: a terracotta planter with a small tree, a stone plaque in a courtyard, a ceramic urn. Stone lasts well outdoors; terracotta can crack with winter frost unless it's sheltered. Indoors, anything works, so choose what feels right for your home.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Siena actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Florence, about 31 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Siena and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Siena page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Siena?
The closest communities we cover are Florence (about 31 miles), Bologna (about 81 miles) and Rome (about 114 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Siena too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
Who else can take a paw print if my vet in Siena doesn't?
Several people can. The crematory that serves Siena normally makes one when your pet arrives. A mobile or home-visit vet may carry a kit. A groomer who knows your pet can tidy the paw fur and help you take one on a good day. And you can do it yourself with air-dry clay and a pet-safe ink pad from a craft store. What matters is that it happens before cremation or burial.
