Paw Print Keepsakes in Tuscany: what to know
If you're in Tuscany and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.
Rural parts of Tuscany often mean a pet travels some distance to be cremated. That makes the local vet, or your own kitchen table, the right place for a print. Crematories can take one at intake as a backup, but a print you took yourself is one you've already checked.
We cover 2 communities in Tuscany, from Florence and Siena.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Cremation is a minority choice for people in Tuscany, at about 38.16%[1], and the pet aftercare trade is smaller to match. A crematory an hour away may not list prints at all, and a vet clinic may never have been asked for one. Bring your own kit. A pack of air-dry clay plus a card and a pet-safe ink pad costs little, fits in a bag and means the print doesn't depend on anyone else's supply cupboard.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Tuscany rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Tuscany the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[2], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[3] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[4]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Tuscany, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[5] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[6] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[7] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[8] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

What Tuscany allows after your pet dies
If you might move away from Tuscany one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Tuscany allows, set out below.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Keeping the print and the memory close
If you'd like ashes and the print together without wearing them, an ashes-in-glass piece needs only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[10] of ashes, and the paw can be engraved on its base or a matching frame. Use our jewelry ash capacity guide to see how far your pet's ashes will go, and our ashes sharing planner if several people want a piece.

Questions people ask
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Tuscany?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
How many communities do you cover in Tuscany?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 2 communities in Tuscany, including Florence and Siena. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Tuscany say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Tuscany?
Across Tuscany, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Tuscany, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
How much does a paw print cost in Tuscany?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[8], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[7]. Ask local providers for a written price.
