Paw Print Keepsakes in Shizuoka: what to know
If you're in Shizuoka and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.
Home euthanasia has become far more common across Shizuoka, and it has made paw prints easier. When the vet comes to you, the goodbye happens on your pet's own bed, with no waiting room and no rush to leave. Many home-visit vets carry a clay kit. Even if they don't, you can take your own print before they arrive, in a room your pet knows.

Cremation habits in Shizuoka and the print window
When roughly 99.97%[1] of human funerals in Shizuoka end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.
The cremation figure for Shizuoka comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What paw print keepsakes cost in Shizuoka
Pet funeral providers across Asia usually sell packages, and some include a paw print, a fur clipping or a small keepsake. We haven't found reliable local prices for prints on their own. For context, a Tokyo memorial park charges JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[2]. Ask providers in Shizuoka exactly what their package covers.
In some Asian cities, the public route leaves nothing behind. Hong Kong's government, for instance, advises owners that a bagged animal can go to a refuse collection point, from where it goes to landfill[3]. Any keepsake, including a print, then depends on you or a private provider. If cost is the worry in Shizuoka, a home print costs very little and can be taken before you decide anything else.
| Place or item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo, individual cremation, pet under 5 kg | JPY 22,000[2] | Tax included; ask about a print |
| Singapore, private cremation, cat under 5 kg | SGD 280[4] | Niches extra |
| Hong Kong, individual cremation, 1 to 5 kg pet | HKD 1,300[5] | Basic package |
| Paw print add-on (US median, for comparison) | about $32[6] | No published local price found |

Burial, scattering and prints in Shizuoka
Some towns and councils in Shizuoka run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Shizuoka?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
How many communities do you cover in Shizuoka?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Shizuoka, including Hamamatsu. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Shizuoka, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Shizuoka?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
Can my vet in Shizuoka take a paw print before cremation?
Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.
