Hamamatsu, Shizuoka
Paw print keepsakes in Hamamatsu: where to start
Japan has a strong tradition of memorial days and Buddhist remembrance, and many owners in Shizuoka keep up that rhythm for pets too, lighting incense on the anniversary or at Obon. Keepsakes that fit that routine work well here: a small urn for the altar, a name tablet, a lock of fur in a sealed case. Ask for any engraving to be proofed before it is made, because characters are easy to get wrong.
Space is tight in many Hamamatsu homes, so small memorial pieces are popular: a compact urn that fits on a shelf beside a family altar, a pendant with a pinch of ashes, or a framed paw print. If you plan to keep the bones as well as ash, as many Japanese families do, ask the provider what size container the remains will need so you can choose something that actually fits your space.
Big-city apartments make home prints easier than people expect. You don't need a garden or a workshop, just a clear kitchen table, a towel, the clay or card taped flat and good light from a window. If your pet is a senior, pick a quiet evening after a meal or a walk, when they're drowsy and happy to lie still. A living pet who is relaxed gives a far crisper print than a rushed one taken in the last hours.
With roughly 797,000 residents, Hamamatsu is one of the Shizuoka communities we cover.
Our pages for Nagoya (57 miles, a larger centre), Nara (109 miles) and Kyoto (113 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Hamamatsu as well.

Cremation habits in Japan and the print window
Cremation is the norm for people in Japan (about 99.97%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
The Japan percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hamamatsu, not as a count of pets.
Getting a clean print in Hamamatsu in any season
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Hamamatsu, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

What owners in Hamamatsu typically pay for a print
Pet funeral providers across Asia usually sell packages, and some include a paw print, a fur clipping or a small keepsake. We haven't found reliable local prices for prints on their own. For context, a Tokyo memorial park charges JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[4]. Ask providers in Hamamatsu exactly what their package covers.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Shizuoka: Shizuoka costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What the law in Shizuoka does and doesn't cover
Renters in Shizuoka often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Shizuoka allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, and tuck the original away out of harm's way.
- Come back to it later. One child wants it framed the same week; another won't look at it for months.
Remembering your pet through their print
Lake Hamana, the Nakatajima dunes and the banks of the Tenryu River are places many local families shared with their pets, and it is natural to want a memorial tied to them. Scattering ashes on public land is a sensitive subject in Japan, so ask before you plan it. A garden stone, a potted tree over a biodegradable urn, a pendant or a framed photograph taken at a favorite spot can carry the same feeling without that uncertainty.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hamamatsu?
Usually yes. Nagoya is about 57 miles away, Nara is about 109 miles away and Kyoto is about 113 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hamamatsu follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?
Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Hamamatsu.
My pet died at night in Hamamatsu. Is it too late for a print?
No. If your pet is at home, keep them cool on a towel and take the print yourself when you feel ready, within the first few hours if you can. If your pet is at an emergency hospital, ask the staff to take one, or tell the crematory in the morning that you want a print before cremation. You don't have to decide anything else that night.
