Paw Print Keepsakes in Zurich: what to know
Across Zurich, most pet crematories offer a clay or ink paw print, sometimes included in the package and sometimes as a small extra. But many owners don't know to ask until afterwards. The simplest habit is to mention the print on the very first call, whether that's to your vet, an in-home euthanasia service or the crematory.
Prices for paw prints in Zurich are modest compared with the rest of aftercare. The print is usually one of the cheapest items on the list; what you turn it into, such as a silver charm or an engraved urn, is where costs rise. Ask every provider whether a print is already included before you pay for it separately.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Because Zurich cremates about 90%[1] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.

Paw print costs around Zurich, line by line
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[2] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[3]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Zurich, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.
We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[4]. In Zurich, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[4] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[5] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[6] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[7] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

What the law in Zurich does and doesn't cover
Rules in Zurich say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Some families bring the print out once a year, on the anniversary or on the day their pet came home, and add something new: a photo, a pressed flower, a note from each person. Over time the box or frame becomes a record of how the family carried the memory. If an anniversary hits harder than expected, you're not alone; in RSPCA research on pet loss, 66.9%[9] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was.

Questions people ask
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Zurich?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Zurich?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
How much does a paw print cost in Zurich?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[7], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[6]. Ask local providers for a written price.
Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Zurich?
Across Zurich, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
How many communities do you cover in Zurich?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 3 communities in Zurich, including Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Zurich say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
