Paw Print Keepsakes in Switzerland: what to know

Because a paw print must be taken before cremation or burial, it's the one keepsake in Switzerland that depends on planning rather than shopping. Jewelry, engraving and art can all be ordered later from a scan. The print itself can't be remade, so it's the first thing to arrange.

Makers in Switzerland and abroad can turn a paw print into silver, glass, ceramic, embroidery or a tattoo, and most work from a photo or scan. That means you can keep the original safely at home and shop around. The only part that can't wait is taking the print itself.

We cover 8 communities in Switzerland, from Zurich, Geneva and Basel to smaller towns.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

In Switzerland, about 90%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

We take the Switzerland percentage from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

What owners in Switzerland typically pay for a print

European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[2]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Switzerland what's included before you choose.

In Switzerland, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[3], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[4].

Landlords, parks and permits in Switzerland

Rules in Switzerland say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

Getting a paw print in Switzerland, step by step

  1. For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.

Remembering your pet through their print

A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Switzerland?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

What do other owners in Switzerland choose for a paw print keepsake?

We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.

Can my vet in Switzerland take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

How many communities do you cover in Switzerland?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 8 communities in Switzerland, including Zurich, Geneva and Basel. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Is it better to use a local maker in Switzerland or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.
