Zurich, Switzerland
Arranging a paw print around Zurich
Switzerland has one of the highest cremation rates in the world, and keeping ashes, or scattering them in a meaningful place, is widely accepted in Zurich. For a pet, that might mean a small ceramic vessel, a wooden box, a paw print on slate, or a ring holding a trace of ashes. In a compact apartment, something small and portable is usually the easiest fit.
Many Zurich homes have a balcony rather than a garden, and a memorial can fit that space: a planter with a memorial plant, a small stone among flowers, or a biodegradable urn in a large pot. Swiss winters are hard on outdoor materials, so stone, glazed ceramic and sealed metal outlast painted wood. Indoor memorials suit rented flats. A framed photo beside the ashes can be enough.
Mid-sized practices in Zurich often share weekend and evening cover with other clinics, so the vet on duty when your pet dies may not know you. A simple fix: ask your regular clinic to add a note to your pet's record saying you want a paw print before collection. It takes a receptionist thirty seconds, and the request is then there for whoever opens the file, even if you're too upset to mention it yourself.
About 415,000 people live in Zurich, which makes it the largest of the 3 Switzerland communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Zollikon (3 miles), Kusnacht (4 miles) and Lucerne (25 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Zurich routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
90%[1]
About 90% of people who died in Switzerland in 2020 were cremated.
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation accounts for about 90%[1] of human deaths in Switzerland, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
Source for the Switzerland number: bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Zurich, so the human figure is the best local signal available.
Weather in Zurich and your pet's print
Local weather in Zurich affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Zurich the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Switzerland: Switzerland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Switzerland allows after your pet dies
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Switzerland does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
For what Zurich itself says, see City of Zürich Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately.
What to do first, and what can wait
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Lake Zurich, the Limmat and the forests of the Uetliberg and Zürichberg are places many families associate with their pets. Scattering in a forest clearing often feels more personal than a busy lakeside promenade. Check the rules for public land and the lake, and ask permission before using private land. Some families keep a little back to keep at home.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Zurich?
The closest communities we cover are Zollikon (about 3 miles), Kusnacht (about 4 miles) and Lucerne (about 25 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Zurich too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Zurich page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) reports about 90%[1] of Switzerland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[6] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
