Getting a paw print in Kusnacht: the local picture
Swiss winters are hard on outdoor memorials: frost can crack soft stone and terracotta, and snow can cover a small plaque for weeks. Granite, bronze and dense stone hold up well. Many families in Küsnacht choose a flowering shrub or small tree planted with ashes, which marks the seasons and gives a quiet place to remember. A hydrangea or a small maple suits the lakeside climate.
The Küsnachter Tobel, the wooded ravine that runs from the ridge down to the village, and the lakeside park at the Horn are places many residents connect with memories of their animals. Scattering ashes on public land or in the lake is subject to rules, so check with the Gemeinde first, or choose your own garden or a private spot with permission.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Zurich, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Kusnacht. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
With roughly 14,000 residents, Kusnacht is the 2nd-largest of the 3 Zurich communities we cover. Zurich, roughly 4 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Kusnacht run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Zollikon (2 miles), Zurich (4 miles, a larger centre) and Lucerne (23 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Kusnacht too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Switzerland
Because Switzerland cremates about 90%[1] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.
The Switzerland percentage above is from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Kusnacht, not as a count of pets.
Seasons in Kusnacht and a print that lasts
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Kusnacht, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Kusnacht
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Kusnacht the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
We keep the detailed Zurich price table on one page so it stays current: see Zurich prices.

Local rules worth knowing in Zurich
Burial rules in many places, including Zurich, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
- Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
- Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Around nine in ten Swiss funerals involve cremation, so ashes kept at home or placed in a communal grave are familiar to most Küsnacht families. For a cat, rabbit or bird, that familiarity makes choices easier: a lidded ceramic vessel on a bookshelf, a river stone in the garden, or a slim silver capsule on a chain. Swiss pet cemeteries also exist for those who want a grave to visit.

Questions people ask
How do Switzerland attitudes to cremation compare?
bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) puts the Switzerland human cremation rate at about 90%[1]. We show it on the Kusnacht page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Zurich to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Zurich (roughly 4 miles from Kusnacht) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kusnacht?
Usually yes. Zollikon is about 2 miles away, Zurich is about 4 miles away and Lucerne is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
There's no engraver in Kusnacht. How do I turn a print into jewelry?
Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight, with no shadow, and send the image to a maker who works by mail. Most engraving and jewelry is made from an image, not the original. Keep the clay or ink print at home. If a maker needs the physical print for casting, wrap it well and use tracked postage.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
