Paw Print Keepsakes in Thailand: what to know

Languages, customs and prices differ across Thailand, but a clean paw print needs the same few things everywhere: a relaxed pet or a gentle hand, a firm surface, soft clay or a dry card, and a little patience. If local providers don't offer prints, a home kit ordered in advance does the job just as well.

Paw print keepsakes in Thailand follow the same basic choices as anywhere: a clay impression, an ink or inkless print, or a 3D cast, taken by you, your vet or the crematory. What differs is how aftercare is organized and priced, and which local rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers Thailand as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Because Thailand cremates about 80.0%[1] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.

We take the Thailand percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

What owners in Thailand typically pay for a print

In some Asian cities, the public route leaves nothing behind. Hong Kong's government, for instance, advises owners that a bagged animal can go to a refuse collection point, from where it goes to landfill[2]. Any keepsake, including a print, then depends on you or a private provider. If cost is the worry in Thailand, a home print costs very little and can be taken before you decide anything else.

In Japan, by our estimate about 85% of owners who state a preference want an individual pet funeral rather than a joint one[3], and packages there often include keepsake options. Even communal cremation of a small pet at one Tokyo memorial park costs JPY 14,300[4]. Wherever you are in Asia, check with providers in Thailand that a paw print is listed among the package contents, and ask to see an example.

Rules in Thailand that touch on keepsakes

Rules in Thailand mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
  2. Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
  3. Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
  4. Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
  5. Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
  6. If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.

From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone

A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Thailand, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

How many communities do you cover in Thailand?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Thailand, including Bangkok. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Thailand?

Across Thailand, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Thailand say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

How much does a paw print cost in Thailand?

Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[9], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[10]. Ask local providers for a written price.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
