Hillsboro, Texas
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Hillsboro
Prairie wind and blistering August sun bleach anything painted in Hill County, and spring hail can chip glazes and dent thin metal. Solid stone and heavy bronze come through those seasons best. For a living memorial, a pecan or a cedar elm will take the heat, as long as it gets a long, slow soaking every week or two until it is well established.
Many Hillsboro families have relatives spread between Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco and Austin, and dividing ashes can give each household something to keep. A primary urn stays home while smaller vessels travel. Mention it to the provider at the outset so the portions are prepared that way, and ask for each one to be labeled with the pet's name and the dates.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Hillsboro, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
With roughly 9,036 residents, Hillsboro is the 208th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Grand Prairie, about 47 miles (75 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hillsboro are based.
Our pages for Whitney (12 miles), West (15 miles) and Cleburne (28 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Hillsboro as well.
Our estimate
3,350
How many dog- or cat-owning households Hillsboro has (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,036 ÷ 2.5 = 3,614 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 3,350. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
280
Estimated dog and cat losses in Hillsboro each year
How we calculated this
3,350 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 280 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
About 55.7%[5] of people in Texas are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Hillsboro tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather works against clay and ink
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Hillsboro heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in June, July, August and September you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.
Around August, when highs in Hillsboro run near 97°F, a senior pet may be flat and uncomfortable in the afternoons. That's often a good time for a print, oddly enough: a hot, sleepy dog or cat lies still. Choose a cool room, keep sessions short, offer water and stop if your pet gets restless. You can always try again the next evening.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Hillsboro are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What the law in Texas does and doesn't cover
Rules in Texas mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Hillsboro or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Skip the table. Take the clay or card to your pet instead, wherever they're comfortable, whether that's their bed or a patch of floor.
- Recruit a second person to stroke and reassure your pet while you work on the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats to keep your pet's attention forward and their head still.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Slide a board under the paw and bring the clay up to meet it.
- Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
Remembering your pet through their print
Hillsboro's restored Hill County Courthouse is a reminder that the town values things built to last. Families here often choose memorials in the same spirit: a granite marker, a cast bronze plaque, a well-made wooden chest. Some prefer a smaller, personal piece instead, like a necklace or a photograph with a lock of fur. What matters is that it feels right in your home.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hillsboro?
Usually yes. Whitney is about 12 miles away, West is about 15 miles away and Cleburne is about 28 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many pet owners live in Hillsboro?
By our estimate, about 3,350 households in Hillsboro have at least one dog or cat, and around 280 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 9,036, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the Hillsboro page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 47 miles from Hillsboro) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
