West, Texas
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in West
Strong prairie winds, summer hail and the occasional ice storm test any memorial left outside in McLennan County. A solid granite marker set flush with the ground resists wind and mowers, while taller or lighter pieces can topple. If you want a living memorial, a native such as a cedar elm, a bur oak or a Texas redbud tolerates the heavy blackland soil.
Jewelry can carry more than ashes. Some engravers can reproduce a pet's nose print or paw print on a pendant, using an ink impression or a clear photo. Request a paw or nose print from whoever is caring for your pet before cremation if you think you might want one later. It is easy to do at the time and impossible afterward.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in West, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
With roughly 2,629 residents, West is the 278th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Grand Prairie, roughly 61 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover West run from there.
West sits within easy reach of Hillsboro (15 miles, a larger centre), Whitney (17 miles) and Waco (18 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from West; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
970
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in West
How we calculated this
2,629 ÷ 2.5 = 1,052 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 970. A household with several pets counts once.

How we calculated this
970 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 80 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation habits in Texas and the print window
In Texas, about 55.7%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in West rather than as pet data.
Weather in West and your pet's print
Ink behaves differently in the West heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.
Summers in West are hot: August averages highs around 97°F. Heat is hard on air-dry clay. In dry heat the surface skins over and cracks before the inside has set, so dry your print slowly indoors, away from sunny windows and air vents, and turn it every few hours. In humid heat the opposite happens: the clay stays soft for days, so be patient and don't try to speed it up in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable.

What owners in West typically pay for a print
The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

Landlords, parks and permits in Texas
Rules in Texas mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers West.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in West can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Your paw print plan for West
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Remembering your pet through their print
West is known for its Czech heritage, from kolache bakeries along the interstate to the Westfest celebration each Labor Day weekend. Some families draw on that tradition for a memorial: a pillow or wall hanging embroidered with Czech folk patterns and the pet's name, or a carved wooden box with a traditional design. A quiet, plain urn is just as fitting.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in West?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 97°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How many pet owners live in West?
By our estimate, about 970 households in West have at least one dog or cat, and around 80 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 2,629, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Why does the West page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 61 miles from West) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
