Logan, Utah
How owners in Logan get a paw print
Cache Valley's deep cold is hard on outdoor memorials; meltwater seeps into hairline cracks, refreezes and splits cheap stone and poured concrete. Granite, bronze and kiln-hardened stoneware hold up far longer here. For a planted tribute, pick something rated for very low temperatures, such as a lilac, chokecherry or crabapple, and bring delicate glass or wooden pieces indoors before the first hard frost.
Logan Canyon and the Bear River Range are minutes from town, and many families have favorite spots along the Logan River or up in the high country. Some set aside part of the ashes to release up the canyon later, once they have checked Forest Service rules, and place the rest in an urn indoors. An autumn photograph of the canyon's maples makes a fitting companion piece.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
With roughly 55,576 residents, Logan is the 17th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 68 miles (109 km) away, which is where some providers serving Logan are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Brigham City (19 miles), North Ogden (30 miles) and Ogden (36 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
20,500
Logan: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
55,576 ÷ 2.5 = 22,230 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 20,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,700
Estimated dog and cat losses in Logan each year
How we calculated this
20,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,700 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
With about 46.1%[5] of people in Utah cremated, traditions here lean toward burial, and that often extends to pets. Whatever you choose, a print is the part you can do yourself, at home, with ordinary clay and a towel. It doesn't depend on local services, and it's the one keepsake that has to be made before anything else happens.
The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Logan, not as a count of pets.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Indoor heating in January, February, March, November and December makes the air in Logan homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Logan winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Logan
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Logan whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

Rules in Utah that touch on keepsakes
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Utah are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Logan.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Logan or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print and send it to you, so you know it's clear.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
- Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Students and young families come and go with the university calendar, so many Logan households want a memorial that can travel. Small urns, cremation pendants and photo keepsakes all pack easily into a moving box. Longer-term residents with gardens sometimes choose a flat stone set among perennials or a young tree, which suits the valley's deep farm soil and its bitter winters.

If you live between Logan and West Jordan, West Valley City, Provo and St. George, either page applies. Every other community in Utah, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Is Logan big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 20,500 Logan households keep a dog or cat and around 1,700 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 55,576), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Logan page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How does Logan's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Logan, with average highs around 89°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 68 miles from Logan) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
